Artist Statement

moon women: reflections of Vietnam was born out the my desire to return home to a place I've never known. Alex Spragens and I embarked on a journey to Vietnam through Centre College's Creative Thinking Immersion Program to grapple with postcolonial identity, decolonization, and generational healing via artistic expression. Alex Spragens and I collaborated through the medium of painting and poetry respectively to utilize artistic expression as a tool of decolonization: a return to being fully human. My art centers a non-linear journey of reclaiming play, power, and pleasure in an Asian American perspective. In moon women: reflections of Vietnam, I explore the matters of the heart that longs for a liberated world.
